History |
|
The initiative to
establish a bank in Suriname was taken by Simon
Abendanon, who was a captain and process-server in
Suriname. The idea occurred to Mr. Abendanon as a
result of the monetary chaos in Suriname at the
time. In 1863, when slavery was abolished, he
expected that agriculture would flourish and, as a
consequence, trade activities would expand. In order
to stimulate this growth, he conceived the idea to
establish a bank.
Organization Chart
current situation
De
Surinaamsche Bank was established on January 19,
1865. The general management of the bank had its
seat in Amsterdam up until 1951, after which the
seat was moved to Paramaribo. Till that moment, all
shares were in the hands of De Nederlandsche
Handelmaatschappij that merged with the Twentse Bank
to become the Algemene Bank Nederland. When the
Surinamese Government felt that too large a part of
the Surinamese banking business was in foreign
hands, the bank was converted into a Surinamese
corporation on January 1, 1977. With this action,
41% of the shares ended up in the hands of the
Surinamese people and 10% was held by the Republic
of Suriname. The remaining 49% of the shares
remained in the hands of the ABN AMRO Bank that was
the result of the merger between the Algemene Bank
Nederland and the Amro Bank. On March 8, 2001, a
purchase agreement was signed between the ABN AMRO
Bank and the insurance company of Assuria with
regard to all the shares (49%). On July 25, 2001,
the transfer of the shares from the ABN AMRO Bank to
Assuria took place.
De Surinaamsche Bank, up until the establishment of
the Central Bank of Suriname in 1957, also fulfilled
the role of circulation bank, a role that the Bank
still fulfills up till the present day in
Nieuw-Nickerie (Nickerie District) and Moengo (Marowijne
District) on behalf of the Central Bank. In the
meantime, De Surinaamsche Bank has developed into
the leading bank in Suriname. Its headquarters are
located at the Henck Arronstraat 26 and are
supported by 5 branch offices in the other areas as
well as 2 branch offices in Nieuw-Nickerie, Moengo
and Zanderij respectively.
The Bank is full owner of 4 subsidiary companies,
namely the Surinaamse Trustmaatschappij N.V. (Suritrust),
The Financing Company Paramaribo (Finapar), N.V.
Kankantrie Investment Company and Surinaamse
Computer Maatschappij N.V. |
